Bonamiosis was first reported in association with mass mortality of flat oysters, Ostrea edulis, in June 1979 in L'Ile Tudy, Brittany. The disease rapidly spread to all of the oyster farming areas in France but also in other European countries. The French flat oyster production, which already suffered from another protozoan disease, marteiliosis, decreased from 5500 mt in 1979 to less than 2000 mt after 1980. In 2001, about 350 French farms sell 1650 mt of flat oysters. This production mainly relies on natural spat collection which specially occurs in Quiberon bay. Depuis la fin des années soixante, la conchyliculture française doit faire face à des mortalités importantes d'huître plate, Ostrea edulis, causées entre autres, par le protozoaire, Bonamia ostreae, responsable de la bonamiose. Peu de moyens sont à l'heure actuelle à la disposition des professionnels pour lutter contre cette maladie. L'obtention d'animaux résistants à cette infection est une voie retenue et explorée par l'Ifremer pour combattre la bonamiose et tenter d'apporter des solutions aux conchyliculteurs. Bonamiosis due to the intrahaemocytic protistan parasite Bonamia ostreae is a European endemic disease affecting flat oysters Ostrea edulis. After its first description in June 1979 in L'Ile Tudy, Brittany, the parasite rapidly spread to all French oyster farming areas and in other European countries through transfers of live molluscs. The protozoan Bonamia ostreae (Ascetospora) is the etiological agent of bonamiosis, or hemocyte disease of the European fiat oyster, Ostrea edulis (Pichot et al., 1980). Since this infection was first reported from the coast of Brittany (Comps et al., 1980), the parasite has spread rapidly along the French Atlantic coasts (Grizel & Tigé, 1982), and in the European countries including the UK, Holland, lreland and Spain (Bannister & Key, 1982; Van Banning, 1982; Polanco et al., 1984).
